The\u00a0May 17, 2024<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the 34th International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia is celebrated around the world, Italy at the\u00a036th place out of 48 European countries\u00a0<\/strong>monitored, confirmed by data obtained from the\u00a021,000 contacts<\/strong>\u00a0received in the last year throughout the national territory by the service\u00a0Gay Help Line 800 713 713<\/strong>\u00a0toll-free number against homophobia and transphobia, and from\u00a0Speakly.org chat<\/strong>.Since the Gay Help Line service began in March 2006, the service\u00a0received over 350,000 hits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

More alarming data from\u00a0Gay Help Line 800 713 713<\/strong>\u00a0(gayhelpline.it<\/a>) and the chat\u00a0Speakly.org<\/strong>\u00a0relating to the last year. It emerges that homophobia and transphobia are not stopping and the negative social impact of violence and discrimination on LGBT+ people is growing substantially. The data that unfortunately emerges is that\u00a053% of violence<\/strong>, of which 36% suffers domestic violence,\u00a0<\/strong>especially young people and adolescents.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0coming out to the family<\/strong>\u00a0caused a violent response from relatives in the\u00a032.3% of the total cases<\/strong>\u00a0followed in Gay Help Line of which the\u00a027%<\/strong>\u00a0of the victims are\u00a0minors<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a011 to 18 years old<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Domestic violence against minors has a high frequency (26.7% of cases post coming out)<\/strong>\u00a0and is concerned about its forms and consequences: parental rejection triggers an escalation that includes insults, psychological pressure, and blackmail through the demand to "convert" or be kicked out of the house.<\/p>\n

They are on the rise\u00a0at 27% attacks on same-sex couples<\/strong>\u00a0in public places such as\u00a0transportation<\/strong>, the street and in particular the meeting places of the LGBT+ community<\/p>\n

The last year was then characterized by the\u00a0phenomenon of robberies aimed at homosexual youths<\/strong>\u00a0In 5.4% of cases, particularly in the Lazio and Umbria regions, several gangs have developed a criminal plan.<\/p>\n

I6% of the cases are adolescents who were victims of bullying at school<\/strong>\u00a0or in sports, but also in informal social activities. In half of the cases, bullying also occurs on social media and online platforms.<\/p>\n

Parental cases rise to 4.9%\u00a0<\/strong>of minors aged between 13 and 17 interested in paths relating to their gender identity as people\u00a0trans, transgender and non-binary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The cases of\u00a0gender-based violence<\/strong>\u00a0occurred towards women in\u00a030,6%<\/strong>\u00a0of cases, people with male gender expression in 8.2%, transgender women in 34.7%, and people with female gender expression in 16.5%.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0public spaces have been the site of threats<\/strong>, homophobic, lesbian, and transphobic attacks in\u00a012.4% of cases, of which 34.2%\u00a0<\/strong>of these, violence was expressed on\u00a0web<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

32.6% of cases were victims of discrimination<\/strong>, of which 64% of these are in the workplace and 23.6% in the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n

40.4% of the cases followed<\/strong>, is related to support for requests for the reception of LGBT+ people, fleeing from situations of domestic violence, of which 70.4% of the requests come from users between 15 and 26 years old,<\/p>\n

Of approximately 400 cases of LGBT+ youth kicked out of their homes<\/strong>\u00a0only the 10%<\/strong>\u00a0manages to find hospitality in protected family homes such as\u00a0LGBT+ Refuge<\/strong>\u00a0e\u00a0Refuge T*<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013At Ornella's house<\/strong>, our facilities, which welcome LGBT+ people and support them so that they can overcome the trauma they have suffered and achieve their own autonomy through training and job hunting.<\/p>\n

A fact that has remained constant over time is the difficulty for victims to report: the phenomenon of\u2019underreporting (failure to report)\u00a0<\/strong>has a worrying impact on the recognition of the extent of discrimination and violence.<\/p>\n

In this time of intense social pressure, legislative measures to support LGBT+ people, who still lack protection against discrimination, hatred, and violence, are even more urgent.<\/p>\n

The services of\u00a0Gay Help Line, Refuge LGBT+, ,\u00a0<\/strong>Refuge T* \u2013<\/strong>At Ornella's house,<\/strong>\u00a0they had the support of\u00a0UNAR - Presidency of the Council, Lazio Region, Municipality of Rome, Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai and Waldensian Church<\/strong>, and furthermore for the second year the service will be supported by\u00a0Flying Tiger Copenhagen<\/strong>\u00a0and will be visible in 131 stores throughout Italy.<\/p>\n
