Instead, over the past 20 years, we have seen an increase in calls from southern Italy, going from around 20% to over 40%. This data highlights how, given the employment and economic issues, LGBTQIA+ people in southern Italy have greater difficulty finding work. This is due to an already very limited labor market where LGBTQIA+ people are excluded, as well as a lack of dedicated services in some areas.

From the analysis of the data of 20 years the service shows that the phenomena discriminatory in the family, at school and in society, which were constantly decreasing from 2006 to 2019, they started to increase again after the pandemic, returning almost to the levels of the early years and in some cases overcoming them. This data confirms the continued need for a listening and protection platform like the Gay Help Line, especially for younger generations. This trend is due to a social shift that has made work and social situations more challenging for many since the pandemic, leading to an increase in discriminatory incidents.

For the Migrants since 2020 to date They went from 2-3% to 35% in 2025 This is due to regulatory changes that have made it possible for LGBTQIA+ migrants to obtain protection based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. This self-disclosure was previously more difficult for people to face, as they avoided coming out to institutions due to fears left behind by experiences of persecution in their countries of origin.

Instead, in the 2025 violence and discrimination have had a significant social impact: almost 1 in 2 people (49,72%) declares having suffered at least one form of violence, a figure which has also increased significantly from 2020 to today.

Young people remain among the most affected: among minors,’85% suffers at least one form of violence and the 40% abuse after coming out, with effects on isolation and psychological well-being. post-coming-out abuse are the most widespread form (18,51%) and occur mainly within the family.

Even among minors,’85% is exposed to violence and the 40% suffered abuse after coming out, school bullying concerns the 2,76% of total contacts.

Discrimination in the workplace is the most represented category (64,1%), with the 33,87% cases related to sexual orientation and 11,29% motivated by gender identity

Particularly serious is the data of 14,52% on health discrimination: more than one in seven cases that emerged concerns access to health services and the right to prevention.

Hate speech is confirmed as a structural component of violence: 38,95% of people have suffered homophobic, lesbian, and transphobic verbal abuse. Of this total, homophobic insults were recorded. 53.9% of the detected episodes and transphobic 23,4%, to which is added misgendering 20,6%.

Transgender and gender diverse people represent more than 30% of users , confirming a strong exposure to vulnerability and discrimination.

Of the total cases of discrimination, the areas with the greatest incidence concern work 45,16% and access to health 14,52%, with particular impact on transgender people

This year we celebrate 20 years of service and remember that in 2011 the service Gay Help Line has been included in the White Paper of the Ministry of Equal Opportunities and, over the years, he has also collaborated with the Ministry of Education. The service was supported by the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Rome, the Waldensian Church, and the Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai through 8×1000 funds, which have allowed the continuity of the activities to this day.

Among the cases we have dealt with we cannot forget that of Andrea Spezzacatena in 2012, which became known to the news as “the boy with pink pants”. It was thanks to listening to his schoolmates who called Gay Help Line to tell them about the homophobia Andrea was suffering that the Facebook page was brought to the attention of his mother, who was thus able to understand how much her son was suffering, and to’OSCAD, the Ministry of the Interior's anti-discrimination observatory. That story was recently brought to the screen in the film of the same name.

All this was possible thanks to the partner who still support us today, but above all thanks to the daily work of thousands of volunteers who over the past twenty years have made Gay Help Line an essential tool against homophobia and a point of reference for those seeking a hearing, protection, and rights.

READ THE 2026 REPORT (referring to the year 2025) WORLD DAY AGAINST HOMOSEXUALISM/TRANSPHOBIA: 20 years of Gay Help Line 800 713 713 in Italy: almost 400,000 contacts, increasing requests…

[1

post-3476","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home
["GET
