JANUARY 29 | PEDALING INTO MEMORY

29 GENNAIO | PEDALANDO NELLA MEMORIA
PEDALING INTO MEMORY 2023
XIX MEMORIAL SETTIMIA SPIZZICHINO
Pedalando nella Memoria is repeated again this year, on the day of Sunday, January 29, 2023.
The event was born from the need to make the new generations more involved and aware of the events that took place in Rome during the Second World War.
The “pedaling“, crossing some of the places symbolic of the dramatic events of those years, aims to preserve the memory and to reconnect the threads of memory through the experiences and stories of those who lived through them, to understand, recognize and combat old and new discriminations, as well as to serve as a warning to current and future generations, so that what happened must never happen again.
The event also aims to spread a message of hope and peace for the future, through participation and sharing in a bike ride.
Plan
9:30 a.m. Tiburtina Station – “Memory Track” from where the trains, loaded with deportees, departed for the concentration camps.
Performance by the Sgarbatello Choir of Villetta
10:15 a.m. Zingari Street – Monti District, the place where the plaque commemorating all the Roma, Sinti, and Camminanti who died in the extermination camps was installed. The plaque was placed here because the street in question is called Via degli Zingari, and was installed by the City of Rome in January 2001.
Musical Intervention by Nora Tigges
10:45 a.m. Gay Street – Via di San Giovanni in Laterano It's Rome's gay street. Homosexuals were sent to extermination camps like Jews, Gypsies, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Homosexuals were identified by a pink triangle sewn on their chests, women by a black triangle. It's estimated that at least 50,000 people were interned. Speech by representatives of the gay community and the Sincoro Choir.
11:20 a.m. Portico d'Ottavia – The heart of Rome's Jewish Ghetto, Here, on October 16, 1943, 1,259 Jews (including 207 children) were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. Only 16 survived the extermination, one woman: Settimia Spizzichino. Representation by Emanuele Di Porto, Representative of the Jewish Community.
12.00 pm San Saba – A silence that lasts 65 years.
In 2007, Mino, the eldest of the Moscati brothers, invited Bruno Fantera to testify about what had happened. Shortly thereafter, the initiative to recognize him as Righteous Among the Nations was launched. The ceremony took place in the synagogue on September 18, 2008. The State of Israel awarded the honor to Bruno and in memory of his mother, Esifile. Two olive trees were planted in the Garden of the Righteous in Israel, and their names were inscribed in the Yad Vashem museum. Speech by Fabrizio Fantera.
12.45 pm Settimia Spizzichino Bridge – The bridge is dedicated to the only deportee in Rome who returned from Auschwitz. After her death, the City of Rome decided to dedicate the Settimia Spizzichino Bridge, the overpass connecting Via Ostiense to the Circovallazione Ostiense, to her.
Speakers included Amedeo Ciaccheri, president of the VIII Municipio, and Elio Limentani, representing the Settimia Spizzichino family.
1:30 PM Villetta Social Lab Garbatella
Villetta Social Lab was founded in 2015 inside the Villetta in Garbatella, the historic neighborhood headquarters of left-wing parties since 1944. The Villetta section was later named after Giuseppe Cinelli, a communist from Garbatella who was martyred in the Fosse Ardeatine, where he and his older brother Francesco met their deaths.
Performance by the Sgarbatello della Villetta Choir.
It will also be possible to have lunch at the BioOsteria della Villetta Social Lab, curated by Massimone (reservations are recommended for lunch).
