International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – Gay Help Line: One in three LGBTI+ migrants experience discrimination in Italy, and 75% has still not received documents after 12 months.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Alarming data for LGBTI+ migrants collected by the Gay Help Line 800713713 and Speakly.org: We are calling for a streamlined reception system and greater protection for LGBTI+ migrants who are victims of violence here in Italy as well..

Gay Help Line, in collaboration with the Arcigay Roma migrant help desk, offers legal, psychological guidance and social mediation. Below is our information:

  • 14% of users report having suffered attacks and violence because they are LGBTI+ also in Italy, of which 33.4% have suffered them in reception centres by compatriots or other migrants
  • 75% of asylum seekers, after a year, does not have the provisional documents, which are linked to fundamental rights to health, work and reception.
  • 17% of migrants requested psychological support from our center, determined by the traumatic experience of violence based on gender or sexual orientation, and in the absence of dedicated public services
    Users are aged between 18 and 53: they mostly come from Central and South America, Arab countries, but also Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa and South-East Asia.
  • 44% are people seeking asylum and protection due to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGIESC)
  • 12,31% arrived in Italy through a system of labor and/or sexual exploitation. Of these, 80% are transgender women.

Furthermore, according to the latest report by Ilga World There are 73 countries where LGBTI+ people are exposed to violence and persecution.: this also led to an increase in the number of 25% orders in 2023.

To better meet the needs for the protection and understanding of rights, in addition to offering legal, psychological, and social mediation counseling, this year Gay Center has activated a collaboration protocol with Spazi Circolari, which has always been committed to supporting people, ensuring a fair exchange of information and ensuring the enforcement of all human and civil rights.
