Inauguration of the Plaque in Memory of Daniele Stoppello

Inaugurazione Targa in Memoria di Daniele Stoppello

Rome – It will be inaugurated on April 24, at 4:00 PM, the commemorative plaque in memory of Daniele Stoppello, historic activist and lawyer for LGBT rights, at the Gay Center headquarters, in via Zabaglia, 14.

Exactly four years after Stoppello's death, the plaque, created with the contribution of Taffo Funeral Services, will remember the importance of the legal battles always carried out in defense of the victims of discrimination.

Daniele Stoppello, besides being a dear friend, was a brilliant and passionate professional. A clear-headed and imaginative comrade in arms. The legal cases Stoppello handled were landmarks, such as the Chinazzo, when for the first time in Italy the partner of a murdered man was recognized as a civil party in the trial against the murderer. Or like the trial Swastika against the man sentenced to seven years for stabbing a young man in the EUR district. For the first time, an association, Arcigay Roma, was recognized as a civil party. For the first time, the ruling clarified a homophobic motive, despite the absence of a law against homophobia. This ruling has also served as a benchmark for many other courts.

And many other cases, always in support of victims of homophobia and against abuse, such as when he managed to prevent Vahid from returning to Iran, thus saving the young man's life.

Daniele Stoppello is part of the history of our movement, which is why we decided to display a commemorative plaque outside the Gay Center.
