Lorenzo Fontana could be the new Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, supported by Salvini's League and the center-right. The former Minister of Family Affairs is known for his homophobic, anti-abortion, and racist views. In recent years, the press has reported Fontana's positions, which we express grave concern about: "Gay families don't exist, now there are fewer abortions," "our people are under attack" in reference to same-sex families and migrants, and "gays want to dominate us and wipe out our people.".
This is worrying after the election of Ignazio La Russa as President of the Senate, a collector of busts of Mussolini who has always held homophobic views, such as when he called growing up in a same-sex family a "disability.".
The exercise of democracy must ensure respect for constitutional principles and democracy itself, such as the secular nature of the state and anti-fascism. The Second and Third Offices of the State must be representative and guaranteeing elements: it is worrying for a state based on the rule of law that such fundamental roles could be held by people with nostalgic memories or who spread conspiracy-theory, anti-abortion, and homophobic fake news, against the rights of women, minorities, and human rights in general. We express our deep concern about the candidacy of Lorenzo Fontana for Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.
