Gay Center does not remain silent in the face of the new wave of discriminatory propaganda posted by the association "Pro Vita e Famiglia" in the streets of Rome.
These posters, which misrepresent the reality of educational pathways in schools, have targeted transgender minors and adolescents of school age, with messages that not only discriminate but also fuel a toxic climate in the very places—like schools—where respect, freedom, and self-determination should thrive. “"For this reason, we strongly reiterate our commitment against any attempt to bring stereotypes and prejudices towards LGBTQIA+ people back into the public debate."”
We welcome the timely intervention of the Municipality of Rome, which ordered the immediate removal of the posters, recognizing their discriminatory nature and their conflict with the principles of equal dignity and inclusion that the administration promotes. We also believe it is essential ensure an automatic and binding system which prevents the spread of similar offensive and falsifying content in the public spaces of the city.
For this reason, we ask that the amendment we proposed be accepted during the discussion of the resolution against homophobia and transphobia. .
There The proposal envisages making Article 23, paragraph 4-bis of the Highway Code operational. which reads:
“Any form of advertising on roads and vehicles containing sexist or violent messages, offensive gender stereotypes, or messages that undermine respect for individual freedoms, civil and political rights, religious beliefs, or ethnic origin, or that discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical or mental abilities, is prohibited.”
Allowing The removal of posters containing discriminatory or misleading content can also be carried out directly by the competent authorities, such as the Municipal Police.
Furthermore, Gay Center is responding to recent events by hosting the official opening of LGBT+ History Month*, an event created in 1994 in the USA by a high school teacher to encourage the fight for equality and the fight against homophobia.
For this reason we propose a public debate in defense of education on differences and the representation of every subjectivity, Monday, April 14, 6:30 pm at the Gay Center, via Luigi Galvani 51F, where Laura Schettini, researcher in Women's and Gender History at the University of Padua, Sara Marini, co-founder of the SCOSSE association, and Collettivo Marielle Roma3 will speak, an event organized by the LGBT+ History Month Promotion Committee.
